A male tummy tuck is a surgical procedure in which your surgeon will remove excess loose skin and fat of your lower abdominal area.  You will have a low horizontal incision that can extend from hip to hip and hidden below your belt-line.  During the surgery, your surgeon will repair your abdominal muscles if necessary. The skin is stretched to create a flatter abdomen and your belly button is reconstructed. The result is a tightened and toned midsection.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Male Tummy Tuck?

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MALE TUMMY TUCK AND A FEMALE TUMMY TUCK?

  • We use similar techniques but with special considerations made for male anatomy.
  • Most tummy tucks in females correct changes due to pregnancy, while in males, they correct changes due to weight loss.
  • The incision for male tummy tucks is usually straighter and shorter than in females.
  • Females tummy tucks usually repair a separation of muscles due to pregnancy, whereas males usually do not need muscle repair.
  • Males tend to have more “visceral” belly fat, which can’t be corrected with Tummy Tucks. In these cases, weight loss may necessary before the procedure.
  • Males also carry more muscle mass, so the BMI cut-off may be higher than it is for females.
If you are considering a male tummy tuck, then you may be a good candidate if:
  •  You have loose skin and fat in your lower abdominal area.
  • You have had significant weight fluctuations or major weight loss resulting in a loose abdominal area.
  • You have weak abdominal muscles as a result of weight loss.
  • You are in general good health and are at or near your ideal body weight.
  • You are a non-smoker and have no pre-existing conditions that would prevent you from having a major surgery.

What Are The Benefits of a Male Tummy Tuck?

A male tummy tuck can dramatically change the appearance and function of your abdominal area by:
  • Removing loose skin of the lower abdomen to create a tight smooth abdomen.
  • Removing excess fat of the abdominal area along with the loose skin.
  • Tightening weak abdominal muscles to strengthen and tone the abs.
  • Improving and revealing your underlying ab muscles for a more toned look.

*At XSculpt, our mission is to help you achieve the body and results that you want. Because your body goals are our specialty, we offer a wide range of procedures to address your problem areas.

MALE TUMMY TUCK COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.   What is a male tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)?

A male tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that reshapes and tightens loose abdominal skin, fat, and muscles due to weight loss.  It is not a weight loss procedure and is not designed to treat obesity or large belly due to obesity.

2.   What causes loose skin in the abdomen?

Loose skin occurs in men usually as a result of rapid weight loss secondary to crash dieting or weight loss surgery.  When the fat loss is this rapid, the skin does not have enough time to adjust properly and the skin sags.  This loose skin can be accompanied by stretch marks around the belly button and flanks.

3.   Are there exercises I can do to get rid of loose skin in the abdomen?

The short answer is NO.  Abdominal wall core exercises such as crunches and planks can help strengthen and build up the underlying muscles, which may help with abdominal tone,  but the skin itself will usually stay loose and wrinkly.  Furthermore, the loose skin often hides the underlying muscle definition despite a low body fat percentage.

4.   Can I get rid of loose abdominal skin without surgery?

There are laser techniques currently being tried that can somewhat improve the looseness slightly, however the end result is never as good as surgery itself.  Often the cost of multiple sessions of these treatments end up being much more than the cost of an XSculpt abdominoplasty.

5.   When can I go back to work after a male tummy tuck?

This depends a lot on the nature of your job and your personal discomfort level.  If your job doesn’t require you to be very physical, then 2 weeks is reasonable to expect.  However, if your job requires a lot of lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying, you may require longer (3 to 4 weeks) and it may be 6-8 weeks before you feel strong enough to resume your normal amount of activity and lifting.

6.   When can I exercise after a male tummy tuck procedure?

Preferably 4 weeks cardio and 6-8 weeks for weight training to allow for your incisions to heal adequately.

7.   How long does a male tummy tuck surgery take?

The procedure itself is approximately 90 to 120 minutes from start to finish.  There is a preparation time and a recovery time that adds about 1 to 2 hours each to the actual total time.

Following the procedure, patients go home the same day.

8.   What kind of anesthesia is used?

A male tummy tuck is usually an outpatient procedure and best done under Total IV Sedation or General Anesthesia.  This is for your comfort and safety since the surgery can take 2-4 hours to perform.  You will not experience any pain or have any memory of the surgery. You can expect to be in our recovery room for 1-2 hours afterwards and discharged the same day to recover at home.
During the surgery, we also inject a special type of local anesthetic called Exparel® which can last up to 3 days and help with the post operative pain.

9.   Will I have bad scars after a male tummy tuck procedure?

Almost all cosmetic procedures are associated with some scarring. The incision used for an abdominoplasty in general spans the length from one hip bone to the other.  However, your incision will be placed in such a way so that it is hidden below your belt line.  When wearing pants or shorts, the incision won’t be visible.  After 6-12 months, the scar will fade and become less visible.   Ultimately the scar should appear as a thin line, which is much easier to hide than loose skin.

10.   Is a male tummy tuck procedure painful?

You may feel some discomfort after a tummy tuck, but most of our patients are able to manage with prescription pain medication

While every patient’s pain tolerance is different, the techniques used in our abdominoplasty procedure aim at reducing post-operative pain.   We focus on avoiding excessive dissection, gentle and precise technique, and strict avoidance of bleeding.  We also use Exparel®, a special long-lasting local anesthetic, which has been shown to significantly reduce postoperative pain for up to 3 days.

11.   How long will it take to see my results?

You will see results immediately after the procedure. Swelling and bruising is common in the beginning, but usually goes away after a couple of weeks.

*As the healing process continues, you will see a flatter, more defined abdominal wall. The healing process does take time and the final result will likely be most appreciated 3 to 4 months after surgery when the tissues and scars soften, sensation returns to almost normal, and intermittent discomfort is minimal.

*Combined with a program of a healthy diet with exercise, many patients may continue to see improving results 6 to 12 months after surgery!

12.   Will I have drains after a male tummy tuck?

Because a lot of skin and fat manipulation is done during this procedure, drains are necessary to prevent the collection of fluid and blood during the first few days of recovery. These drains are not as bothersome as you may think and are usually removed at the first post op visit 3-5 days after surgery.  The drain removal is done in the office,  takes only a split second, and is generally not painful.

13.   How long will it take to heal?

After your surgery, you will have some swelling, discomfort, and/or pain around your incision site. These symptoms should resolve after a couple of days.  We do use drains which are often removed within one week of the surgery.

A compression garment will have to be worn for 4 weeks following the procedure to prevent movement of the skin which may affect how the area heals as well as to keep a consistent pressure on the healing tissue.

We would recommend you take at least 2 weeks off of work for recovery. After the first week you can do light activities and return to work, but this can be different for each patient. The post-procedure period is critical for a good cosmetic result so adequate time off should be taken to ensure this.
