WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MALE TUMMY TUCK AND A FEMALE TUMMY TUCK?
- We use similar techniques but with special considerations made for male anatomy.
- Most tummy tucks in females correct changes due to pregnancy, while in males, they correct changes due to weight loss.
- The incision for male tummy tucks is usually straighter and shorter than in females.
- Females tummy tucks usually repair a separation of muscles due to pregnancy, whereas males usually do not need muscle repair.
- Males tend to have more “visceral” belly fat, which can’t be corrected with Tummy Tucks. In these cases, weight loss may necessary before the procedure.
- Males also carry more muscle mass, so the BMI cut-off may be higher than it is for females.
- You have loose skin and fat in your lower abdominal area.
- You have had significant weight fluctuations or major weight loss resulting in a loose abdominal area.
- You have weak abdominal muscles as a result of weight loss.
- You are in general good health and are at or near your ideal body weight.
- You are a non-smoker and have no pre-existing conditions that would prevent you from having a major surgery.
- Removing loose skin of the lower abdomen to create a tight smooth abdomen.
- Removing excess fat of the abdominal area along with the loose skin.
- Tightening weak abdominal muscles to strengthen and tone the abs.
- Improving and revealing your underlying ab muscles for a more toned look.
*At XSculpt, our mission is to help you achieve the body and results that you want. Because your body goals are our specialty, we offer a wide range of procedures to address your problem areas.
Although abdominoplasty or “Tummy Tucks” are traditionally performed for women, men with loose skin can benefit from the procedure as well.
Our XSculpt surgeons specialize in male body contouring and have considerable experience in male abdominoplasty surgery. Our technique specifically focuses on enhancing the appearance of a male torso. We also can combine hormone optimization and weight loss therapy after surgery to further bring out the underlying abdominal wall musculature when combined with a good diet and training program. A preoperative health and hormone blood test assessment with consultation is complimentary when your surgery is scheduled with us.
MALE TUMMY TUCK COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A male tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that reshapes and tightens loose abdominal skin, fat, and muscles due to weight loss. It is not a weight loss procedure and is not designed to treat obesity or large belly due to obesity.
Loose skin occurs in men usually as a result of rapid weight loss secondary to crash dieting or weight loss surgery. When the fat loss is this rapid, the skin does not have enough time to adjust properly and the skin sags. This loose skin can be accompanied by stretch marks around the belly button and flanks.
The short answer is NO. Abdominal wall core exercises such as crunches and planks can help strengthen and build up the underlying muscles, which may help with abdominal tone, but the skin itself will usually stay loose and wrinkly. Furthermore, the loose skin often hides the underlying muscle definition despite a low body fat percentage.
There are laser techniques currently being tried that can somewhat improve the looseness slightly, however the end result is never as good as surgery itself. Often the cost of multiple sessions of these treatments end up being much more than the cost of an XSculpt abdominoplasty.
This depends a lot on the nature of your job and your personal discomfort level. If your job doesn’t require you to be very physical, then 2 weeks is reasonable to expect. However, if your job requires a lot of lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying, you may require longer (3 to 4 weeks) and it may be 6-8 weeks before you feel strong enough to resume your normal amount of activity and lifting.
Preferably 4 weeks cardio and 6-8 weeks for weight training to allow for your incisions to heal adequately.
While every patient’s pain tolerance is different, the techniques used in our abdominoplasty procedure aim at reducing post-operative pain. We focus on avoiding excessive dissection, gentle and precise technique, and strict avoidance of bleeding. We also use Exparel®, a special long-lasting local anesthetic, which has been shown to significantly reduce postoperative pain for up to 3 days.
After your surgery, you will have some swelling, discomfort, and/or pain around your incision site. These symptoms should resolve after a couple of days. We do use drains which are often removed within one week of the surgery.
A compression garment will have to be worn for 4 weeks following the procedure to prevent movement of the skin which may affect how the area heals as well as to keep a consistent pressure on the healing tissue.
We would recommend you take at least 2 weeks off of work for recovery. After the first week you can do light activities and return to work, but this can be different for each patient. The post-procedure period is critical for a good cosmetic result so adequate time off should be taken to ensure this.
