Gynecomastia Surgery: What You Need to Know Before Going Under the Knife

Gynecomastia surgery is the process of removing gynecomastia or “man boobs” which is excessive breast tissue that some men have. Gynecomastia can be caused by a variety of reasons. With the right plastic surgeon, gynecomastia surgery is a fast and painless process.

Do I really need to get Gynecomastia surgery?

If you have true gynecomastia, it is nearly impossible to destroy Gynecomastia through exercise or non-invasive devices because these do not destroy glandular tissue. The good news is that Gynecomastia surgery is considered a minimally invasive procedure so you look and feel in tip-top shape in no time!

What Will Happen During Your Procedure?

Before surgery, you will talk to your surgeon about your options and goals and go through your medical history to ensure you are ready for the procedure. Before your surgery you must avoid eating or drinking. Now it is surgery time! The most common technique involves an incision around the nipple (areola). There will also be another incision that follows your natural curve or crease beneath the breast, or smooth healing.

Next, Through these incisions, your surgeon removes excess breast tissue through excision if you have loose skin. This requires a larger incision. If you do not have excess ski, liposuction with a small hose removes fatty tissue through a small incision. Your surgeon can also reposition your nipple, giving more accurate proportions and results. Discuss with your surgeon which methods they use before your surgery. Depending on your severity and the results you are looking for, your surgeon will recommend what they think is right for you.

How Long Does Surgery Take?

Depending on the severity or grade of Gynecomastia, the surgery is longer for some patients than others because more fatty tissue needs removal. Overall, the surgery on average ranges from around 45 minutes to up to 2 hours. Because the surgery is quick and minimally invasive, you can return home shortly after it is over!

Is it Painful?

During the procedure you will be under anesthesia so you will not feel a thing. Everyone in the world has different pain tolerances! Our Surgeons at XSculpt use a minimally invasive technique reducing as much pain as possible. The most important part of Gynecomastia Surgery technique is avoiding the rib cage to reduce feelings of pressure or tension as well as to ensure as minimal bleeding as possible. Because the incisions are so tiny, you should feel ready to return to work in as little as 1-2 days.

What Happens after your Gynecomastia Surgery?

After your Gynecomastia surgery you can go home right away! You receive instructions on how to care for your incisions. As you heal, your provider will give you bandages and supportive chest garments. Pain management medications are given to, of course, reduce pain as well as reduce swelling and lower the risk of infection. In some cases, your provider may recommend draining tubes to place under your skin to reduce fluid build up.

The fluids travel through the tube into a bulb which your surgeon will give drain instructions on how to empty it. At your post-op appointment your surgeon can remove them. Finally, your surgeon should provide diet and exercise tips to help you recover as soon as possible!

Surgery can be scary, but with the right surgeon you will be in good hands. If you think ChestSculpt is right for you, contact us now at XSculpt for a free virtual consultation.
